University of Massachusetts, Amherst – LSL Bio Imaging Lab Renovation

Amherst, MA

Our team was invited to this project by UMass Amherst to work collaboratively with the architect that they had chosen for the design. The purpose of the project was to outfit existing shell space within the LSL building on campus for an incoming researcher. Our role on the project was primarily to help get the design back on budget. Through attending cost workshops with the university and the designer, we were able to get the project back within the budget of $5m.

The design of the lab is fairly typical of what we normally see on this type of higher education laboratory fit out. One of the early pieces of value engineering that our team explored alongside the ownership team and the designer was removing adjacent offices surrounding the base fit out area. This measure proved essential in getting the overall budget back on track. The laboratory design included new finishes, interior partitions, new MEP scope, as well as new lab benches and new casework for the space. There were several challenges from our standpoint, including a quick estimate turn around as well as performing estimation while the design was still being developed. In the end we helped the design team and university complete this bio-imaging lab fit out successfully.
