New York Hall of Science Campus Mitigation

Queens, NY

In August 2021, remnants of Hurricane Ida hit Queens sending over a million gallons of water from sewage drains into the New York Hall of Science (NYHS) in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. It took over a year to clean up and restore the facility.

Stormwater forced its way into the museum’s front doors and flooded the lowest level of the original building, which was constructed for the 1964 World’s Fair. The water made its way to the street level as well, and shredded carpets, took out elevators and destroyed several exhibits, including Mathematica and Charlie & Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure.

To prevent a storm from devasting the structure again, the New York Hall of Science embarked on a climate mitigation strategy by investing in next-generation technology. When the next storm arrives, NYHS will not only be unharmed but more protected from devasting weather events.

Ellana served as cost estimator on this climate change project providing estimates on site restructuring related to drainage infrastructure and stormwater detection on a 1,150,000 SF site.
