Chinatown Branch Library
Boston, MA
Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood lacked a library branch for more than 50 years before a 1,500 SF temporary location opened in 2018 in the basement at 2 Boylston Street. After years of planning, Chinatown residents will soon enjoy a new 17,000 SF library branch located at 55 Hudson Street. The library is part of a larger housing project at 0.4-acre parcel R-1, located at 48-58 Tyler Streets and 49-63 Hudson Streets.
The project will serve as an intergenerational community space promoting Chinese culture and multilingual programs. The vision of the new three-story library is to promote and enhance history and character as a unique Boston neighborhood, and to anchor Chinatown as a cultural center for the network of Asian American communities in the region.
Ellana served as cost estimator on the interior fit out of the library and the base building of the affordable housing project. The library will occupy the ground floor and two additional levels with the nine stories of housing above. Our estimate included movable partitions and other FFE elements.
