LIRR Port Washington Bridge
Port Washington, NY
The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) is the oldest railroad in the country, still operating under its original name. The Port Washington Branch carries 14 million riders annually and is the third-busiest branch on the LIRR. Port Washington Branch is an electrified and double-tracked service, running to Penn Station in Manhattan. It is MTA’s most western LIRR branch and serves various stations including Manhasset, Great Neck, and Bayside.
Ellana served as cost estimator on this rehabilitation project that repaired the rail bridge abutment and bridge steel. Developing a Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) scheme was the biggest challenge since no plans existed. This plan minimizes disruption to the public while protecting both workers and motorists. Components included staged construction, lane closures, detours, and temporary access.
