This project involves providing cost estimating and cost control/change order management services to NYULMC for a new 71,000sf energy building to relieve strain on the medical center’s energy infrastructure. It will provide primary electric service to the campus, accommodate anticipated growth in energy consumption and employ combined heat and power (CHP) generation technology to produce cleaner and more economical energy. The design includes an 8MW cogen plant with standby boilers; a 7.5MW emergency power plant to feed Tisch Hospital and the energy building in case of a Con Edison power outage; and 36-megawatt high-tension electric service. The building will house the campus’ Radiation Oncology department, in a configuration that enables seamless connections between Tisch and Kimmel, both of which will use the new radiation oncology facility. The project, while under construction, was flooded during “superstorm” Sandy. In the aftermath, the team redesigned the project to address immediate post-sandy damage and included mitigation/resiliency measures to prevent future damage. This included relocating major co-gen equipment from below grade to Tisch; rebuilding the existing slab-on-grade to flood-resistant slab with an associated major re-design of the foundation; creating flood barriers; redesign of the existing open loading dock area.
